Samples in Databases

The number of forensic samples in state and national DNA databases is constantly changing as new crimes are investigated and changes are made to laws that require the collection of samples from additional offenders.

The FBI tracks the number of samples in the National DNA Index System or NDIS. NDIS is a system of DNA profile records input by criminal justice agencies. The following statistics show a snapshot of the total profiles in NDIS and the profiles submitted by each State as posted by the FBI.

The FBI does not track the number of samples in individual State databases.
